Background of the study
Microfinance programs have become vital instruments for promoting women’s empowerment by providing financial services and entrepreneurial opportunities. In Kano State, these programs are designed to offer small loans, savings, and financial training to women, enabling them to start or expand small businesses. By facilitating access to capital, microfinance helps women overcome economic barriers, fostering financial independence and increased social status (Aminu, 2023). The empowerment derived from these initiatives extends beyond economic benefits; it enhances self-confidence and encourages participation in decision-making processes both at home and within the community. Microfinance institutions in Kano State also serve as platforms for networking and skill development, thereby contributing to broader social transformation. However, challenges such as high-interest rates, limited outreach, and inadequate support systems often undermine the full potential of these programs. While some studies have highlighted success stories, there remains a need for comprehensive evaluations to understand the multifaceted impact of microfinance on women’s empowerment in Kano State (Hassan, 2024). This study aims to fill that gap by systematically assessing how microfinance interventions empower women economically and socially, and by identifying strategies to overcome existing challenges.
Statement of the problem
Despite the positive impact of microfinance on women’s empowerment, many programs in Kano State suffer from issues such as insufficient funding, limited financial literacy, and high repayment pressures. These factors restrict the ability of women to fully benefit from microfinance services. Additionally, the lack of robust support systems often results in unsustainable business ventures. The disparity between the potential and actual outcomes of these programs necessitates a critical evaluation to determine how microfinance can be optimized to promote lasting empowerment for women in the region (Sani, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of microfinance programs on the economic empowerment of women in Kano State.
To identify challenges that limit the effectiveness of these programs.
To propose recommendations for improving microfinance services to better empower women.
